One of our most charismatic and respected Scouters, George (Jim) Dymoke Green died aged 27 on 4 May 1930.? He was Scoutmaster of the Fourth St Albans Troop, Deputy Camp Chief of Hertfordshire and Editor of The Scouter the forerunner to Scouting Magazine.

Jim Green Gate at Gilwell

Hundreds of people from all over the country attended his funeral at St Albans Abbey? including B-P and several staff from Scout HQ.? His coffin was conveyed from his home by trek cart manned by Patrol Leaders from his Troop for the funeral service and then on to the family grave in Hatfield Road cemetery.? Later, in 1931 a memorial gateway was unveiled at the southern entrance to the Training Ground at Gilwell Park.? Named The Jim Green Gate it was built by his friend and Scouting colleague Don Potter.? I propose to mark the eightieth anniversary of Jim`s death by holding a short ceremony at the gate in Gilwell Park on Saturday 8 May 2010. Personal invitations will be sent to descendants of his family, representatives of Scout Groups, Districts, Hertfordshire Scouts and Guides and TSA who were all originally present at the funeral? If anyone else would like to attend out of interest and to learn more about this remarkable man, please let me know. The ceremony will be followed by a tour of Gilwell Park.
