A reminder of two significant bravery awards from our unique history:
In 1947, Boy Scout Graham Carson of the First Broxbourne Scout Group was awarded the Cornwell Badge by Lord Rowallan the Chief Scout.? Graham had suffered from muscular dystrophy from the age of 5.? By the time he joined the Wolf Cubs at the age of 8 he was unable to walk and at 12 the disease had spread to the rest of his body.? His Scoutmaster commented
Thirty years ago in 1980, Clive Rule was awarded the Silver Cross and Barry Deakin received the Gilt Cross for Gallantry in saving the life of another Scout Steve Chandler.? They were all members of the North Watford Venture Scout Unit.? They were traversing a scree slope on Carrauntoohil, Irelands highest mountain when Steve fell 400 feet down into a river gulley but only inches from a 1000 ft drop.?? They did what they could to stem the bleeding then Barry went off to find help.? Unsuccessful he returned and Clive set off.? He located a crofter |
