Training Advisers

Training Advisers are the cornerstone of the Adult Training Scheme since every learner should be supported by a Training Adviser. Unfortunately in many Districts we do not have enough experienced adults coming forward to offer their help, supporting adults taking up new appointments.

If you hold a Woodbadge you may have considered acting as a Training Adviser, but were unsure of what the role entails or of the commitment required.

Supported by the Local Training Manager, the Training Adviser helps their local Leaders to:

  • Understand the Adult Training Scheme and how it operates
  • Identify their learning needs from their role description
  • Construct a Personal Learning Plan, meeting regularly with the learner to review this and provide on-going support
  • Ensure that the learner has access to appropriate learning
  • Arrange for validation of the learning, or prior learning, when the learner is ready and ensure this is recorded
  • Provide guidance and support as a buddy for the new Leader through their development

Once all the modules are complete, they inform the Local or County Training Manager, who then recommends the award of the Wood Badge to Headquarters, and inform the learner’s line manager.

A Training Adviser normally supports three or four learners, however to support one is equally valued; depending on the adviser’s other commitments. Training Advisers need to complete Module 25 – Assessing Learning, as on-going learning or part of their own Wood Badge.

County Training Team

We are always looking for new faces to join your County Training team. People of all ages, backgrounds and experiences, from all sections, and needed to help manage and deliver adult training. Training of other leaders is fun and can be very rewarding particularly helping to pass on skills to the next generation of leaders.

Vast experience in Scouting is not necessary, although you will have already completed your first Woodbadge. Whatever your interest in Scouting there is a module that reflects this from Programme to Administration, from Practical Skills to Working with Adults. Since most modules are only a couple of hours long you can offer as much or as little time as you like. No formal qualifications are needed, and we would help to train you if necessary in the trainer’s presenting and facilitating modules. If you are enthusiastic about Scouting, and enjoy communicating with others please consider joining the friendly and approachable team.

Safeguarding and Safety Awareness Presenters

If you have an interest in the this field (perhaps professionally) and would like to assist in the delivery of this important training as part of a growing and enthusiastic team please contact Stuart Dickens, County Safety and Safeguarding Training Co-ordinator.

First Aid Trainers

All leaders in the County need to complete a minimum of First Response training and renew every three years. With about 3000 adults in the County that is a lot of training!

To meet this demand we are always seeking to recruit additional First Aid trainers to deliver module 10 – First Response.

You may already be a qualified First Aid trainer but if not you just need a full First Aid certificate (from a course lasting 16hrs or more) and to be comfortable presenting to adults. We will provide the necessary presenting training to qualify you as a First Response trainer.

With a big team this should not be an onerous task and you will be based in your local area, helping to train your colleagues. Please do consider this vital role in ensuring we share the skills necessary for the welfare of all our members
