The IMC is a week long course held at Lochearnhead Scout Station, Hertfordshire Scouts Activity Centre in the Central Highlands of Scotland. The course is open to those who are 13 or above (including adults). No hill walking experience is required prior to the course, although it would prove very beneficial if you have some map reading and basic navigation skills. The course takes place over the Easter period where the weather can be very variable and may be anything from cold and snowy, wet or even hot and sunny. Applicants need to be prepared to go out in the hills whatever the conditions. The week (albeit physically demanding) is a lot of fun and we make sure that there is the right balance between enjoying the mountain environment and providing a learning experience.
Trainees will be placed in parties with others of similar age and experience. Generally, we separate people from the same unit/troop which allows us to concentrate on the skills and experiences relevant to each individual. Including two instructors, party sizes are restricted to eight people.
The course starts with 4 full days on the hill (typically 6-7 hours), returning to the Station each evening for dinner, sleeping in bunkhouse style cabins. During these first three days instruction is given and practical experience is gained. Following this you will head into the hills on a three day expedition where you will apply your new skills and learn how to survive in a tent in remote hill country.
The content of the course will cover planning/safety, navigation and wild country camping. Snow permitting we will practise the use of ice axes too. The course is very practical in nature so you will develop your existing skills and practice your new ones. The core outcomes should be having fun and an adventure, team working, self reliance, basic hill walking/mountaineering skills.
Travel to and from the Station is provided by coach leaving from Hertfordshire. During the course, minibuses are used to take parties from the Station to their start point of their pre-planned routes and to bring them back to the Station at the end of the day’s walk/ expedition.
The course is fully catered with excellent home cooked meals and cakes. We provide all the specialist gear needed, all you need to provide is your own personal kit. Once your application has been received you will receive an information pack containing a kit list and the course objectives. There is also a pre-course meeting where you can meet with some of the Station staff and instructors, with other trainees and ask any questions you have. It is also an opportunity to check some key items of personal kit to ensure you will be comfortable while on the hill.
We travel to and from the Station in full scout uniform, however while at the station we wear “camp” uniform at evening meals; a Lochearnhead Scout Station logo polo shirt. Please indicate on the application form which size you require. Sizes are as follows: XS – 36in, S – 38in, M – 40in, L – 42/44in, XL – 46in, XXL- 48in.
Please Note: All correspondence in relation to the course will be via email, so please ensure on your application form you provide us with an email address that is regularly monitored.
